Great Microbiologists is a 2003 comedic educational brickfilm by Joshua Leasure about the history of microbiology and notable microbiologists. It was created to commemorate Leasure's then-girlfriend graduating college with a microbiology degree and to be shown at a party including faculty and members from the college's microbiology department. The film features European members of the Brickfilms.com community voicing the historic microbiologists in their native languages.
In a lab, a narrator introduces the study of microbiology and describes its many uses in fields such as biotechnology, food and dairy, and medicine. He explains that microscopic organisms are creatures too small to be seen without the use of a microscope, and that there is perhaps no man more famous for his microscopes than Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.
In the 1600's, the Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek is seen using a microscope and discovering micro-organisms, giving them the name animalcules. The narrator explains that Leeuwenhoek was one of the greatest contributors to the then-new field of microbiology and is often called "the father of microbiology". He states that there is another man who is given this title and perhaps contributed the most to microbiology, Louis Pasteur.
In the 1800's, Louis Pasteur explains to an alcohol producer, Monsieur Bigo, his discovery on how to keep wine from spoiling, in a process which would also later be used on other products including milk and would become known as pasteurisation. Some years later, after work with disease-causing micro-organisms and discoveries into what would become the basis for immunology, Pasteur uses his rabies vaccine on a human patient for the first time. The narrator explains that Pasteur would go on to devote the rest of his life to the study of infectious diseases, and then speculates as to what the future may hold for microbiology and the next generation of microbiologists.
